Written in 1943, the play is startlingly relevant to the world today. Crazy-like-a-fox Mme. de Chaillot, played by Jeannine Haas, rallies her devoted if eccentric community to save itself from the corrupt corporate executives who plot to dig up Paris to get to the oil they believe to be beneath the city streets. Featuring downtown Greenfield as the City of Light with local luminaries playing themselves in cameo roles, street performers aflutter on the Common, and ArtsBlock a Parisian café, you will see that, “nothing is ever so wrong in this world that a sensible woman can’t set it right in the course of an afternoon”.

Old Deerfield Productions is in production Truth, an opera about Sojourner Truth, the ex-slave, fiery abolitionist and women’s rights pioneer that will receive 3 full scale performances at the Academy of Music on February 16, 17, 18, 2012 at 7:30 pm.

The work will illuminate the life and legacy of this complicated, brilliant woman who, though illiterate, was a relentless and articulate champion of those deprived of justice and freedom, and whose influence has for too long been overlooked. Sojourner Truth found her voice here in Northampton, MA where she bought her first home and lived in freedom and happiness for the first time in her life.

The score by Paula M. Kimper and libretto by Talaya Delaney are accessible and down-to-earth, much of the music derived from folk themes and spirituals, and many of the words Sojourner’s own. The production will feature gospel singer Evelyn Harris, former member of the African-American women’s a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, in the title role.

The Academy of Music Theatre in Northampton will present a staged reading of Mixed Relief, a new one act play written by New Shoe Theater of New York for the 75th anniversary of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Federal Theater Project directed by Linda McInerney on Thursday, October 21st at 7pm. Mixed Relief presents historical fiction based on extensive research about the lives of three women artists who were employed by the Federal Writers Project of the WPA - Anzia Yezierska, Eudora Welty, and Dorothy West and includes verbatim material from interviews with three contemporary theatre artists –Kara Lee Corthron, Ruth Maleczech and Cassandra Medley. The evening will begin with three notable voices of women’s work, addressing parity for women’s work on stage, featuring Martha Richards of WomenArts and co-founder of the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts, Magdalena Gomez, international award-winning Latina playwright and Dr. Terry Jenoure, world performer, educator and writer.

Mixed Relief premiered at Women’s Project in New York in March 2010 during the annual SWAN Day event (Support Women Artists Now), a national effort featuring work by women and lead by WomenArts to help build support and visibility for women artists. The Academy of Music Theatre will participate in the upcoming SWAN Day event in March of 2011 and is staging Mixed Relief to launch its commitment of encouraging women’s work on stage.

It’s time to create something tender, funny and delicately melancholy after all the harsh times we have been through. Eurydice is a tale of love and letters that tell the story of Eurydice, bride of the ancient Greek mythical musician, Orpheus. On her wedding day, Eurydice is to marry her true love Orpheus, but instead, she trips and falls into the depths of the Underworld. Her memories washed away by the river Styx, Eurydice has a chance encounter with her dead father and the love she feels for him reawakens her memory of who she is. When Orpheus finally finds her in the land of the dead, Eurydice has to choose between following him back to life, or remaining with her father. A poetic and moving modern version of the classic tale of loss and love, Eurydice abounds with surprising plot twists, quirky humor, and an original musical score created especially for the Old Deerfield production by Paula M. Kimper.

This musical opera follows the tumultuous journey of Gormlaith, third wife of the Irish High King Brian Boru, whose passion and pride led her confront her own husband, Brian, on the battlefields of Clontarf and contributed to the downfall of the newly unified Ireland. A legend in her own time, her role in history has been curiously erased… in this opera, she speaks again.

Playwright Talaya Delaney and Composer Rosemary Caine collaborate for the first time on this long lost story of love and revenge. The show will run in July at the Reid Theatre at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA. More news will be coming soon.
